Who Is a Candidate for Knee Replacement Surgery?

Many people living with knee pain reach a point where non-surgical treatments are no longer enough. If pain, stiffness, or loss of mobility are limiting your daily life, you may be a strong candidate for knee replacement surgery. As the joint deteriorates and cartilage wears away, bone-on-bone contact leads to ongoing discomfort, swelling, and reduced function. At this stage, surgery is often the most effective way to restore movement, relieve pain, and protect your independence.

Understanding The Procedure

A knee replacement surgery removes the damaged surfaces of the knee joint and replaces them with synthetic components engineered to replicate the function of a healthy knee. The procedure uses premium-grade materials, chosen for their strength, stability, and consistent performance over many years, ensuring the joint can withstand the demands of daily movement and support long-term function without premature wear. Using precise measurements and careful alignment, the procedure ensures the new joint moves smoothly and remains stable. Each stage is carried out to maximize durability, restore mobility, and support an active lifestyle for many years.

Benefits of Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement surgery is designed to do more than relieve pain. It restores function, enhances mobility, and allows you to move forward with greater comfort and independence. Patients often experience improvements in both daily activities and quality of life. Key benefits include:

  • Significant pain relief: Reduction or elimination of discomfort caused by bone-on-bone friction.
  • Restored mobility and flexibility: Patients have an easier time walking, climbing stairs, and engaging in daily activities.
  • Improved stability and strength: Greater support for movement and confidence in everyday tasks.
  • Enhanced quality of life: The ability to return to hobbies, work, and exercise.
  • Long-lasting results: Advanced materials and precise techniques provide durability for many years.

Recovery Timeline

1

2–3 Days After Surgery

Most patients stay two nights in the surgical centre for monitoring. By the afternoon after surgery, you will begin walking with a walker. Frequent short walks and deep breathing exercises support circulation and healing, while a physiotherapist will guide you through safe movements to build confidence and start recovery.

2

1 Week After Surgery

About one week after surgery, you will have a virtual follow-up with a nurse practitioner to review progress and adjust pain management. Swelling should begin to decrease, and you should be taking several short walks each day. A walker is still recommended for safe movement indoors and outdoors as your strength improves.

3

2 Weeks After Surgery

Two weeks after surgery, you will see your surgeon for a follow-up. Staples are removed, the incision is checked, and walking should feel stronger, though most patients still use a walker. Pain medication is often reduced as comfort and mobility improve.

4

6 Weeks After Surgery

At six weeks, many patients still use a walker. Some may transition to a cane for short distances at home. It is usually safe to begin Phase 2 rehabilitation exercises, with physiotherapy added if needed. Walking endurance should be improving, with most patients able to complete two to four outdoor walks of 15 to 30 minutes.

5

3 Months After Surgery

Around three months, many patients can return to low-impact activities such as golf, pickleball, or tennis, starting gradually. At this point, most can transition to a cane. This stage often marks a return to work, and opioid medications are usually discontinued as strength, mobility, and confidence continue to improve.

6

Ongoing follow-up

Follow-up appointments typically continue for up to twelve months after knee replacement surgery, with progress checks at regular intervals. Imagingmay be ordered at six months or earlier if concerns arise, ensuring your recovery stays on track.
